Keeping the Home Fires Burning

Last week I decided to make Chocolate Chip cookies for the kiddos (alright, alright...me too) for snack.

So I turned my oven on to preheat to 350... I got all my ingredients, measured them out and mixed them up, dropped the dough on the the pan in little mounds. The oven beeped to let me know it was in fact 350 degrees, and I popped them in the oven. Set the timer for 6 min, because the last time I made cookies, I burned the first 2 batches because I didn't set the timer and forgot about them...cut me some slack, I'm a little distracted these days!

So the cookies are in, the timer is set, so I take Ezra to change his diaper. We come back into the kitchen, I see the timer says 3 min to go...and so I sit down to play with him, when I realize I can smell the cookies, I mean really smell them, like they're burning! I look at the timer and it says 2 min, which means they have only been in there for 4 min (sorry, I know you can do the math).

So I look through the oven window and I see FLAMES!! FLAMES! Inside my oven! and I'm holding my newborn, and my other 2 babies are sleeping...I'm freaking out a bit...Not sure if I should call 911 or what. So I put Ezra down and go back to the oven, and thankfully when I open it and the temperature inside goes down a bit the flames go out...wheeww!

This is what the cookies looked like after I pulled them out...don't you want one???

So at first I thought I had lost my mind, because the top element was what was on, you know the one used for broiling, that gets REALLY hot...but I knew I had set the oven to an actual temp, and not just broil...so at least I wasn't crazy, but there was something really wrong with my oven...

Turns out the computer board had gone out in the oven and was just doing whatever it wanted regardless of what I told it to do...nice...don't you jut love technology???

Interaction

Jude really wants to interact with Ezra. He tries really hard. He just gets excited and pretty much loses control of himself. he totally does not get why he can't just squeeze his head or pat him really hard or put toys on his head...
Which brings us to this day.

He really wanted to give that toy to Ezra, and by give it to him I mean put it on his head.

Here he is objecting to my interference.

But as you can see Ezra thought it was great fun...he just didn't know the kind of danger he was actually in.

Little Friends...

Our very sweet friend Page, loaned us a baby swing when Annalee was born. Thankfully Page was finished having babies, because I don't think she realized we would need it for the next 3-4 years!

But it has been awesome and all of our babies have enjoyed it. It has a little mobile with little birds and bees that all 3 babies have been absolutely mesmerized by. We have always called them their little friends...

Here is Ezra having some...well...intense time with his little friends...

Seriously though, what the heck did people do before there were baby swings?? I think I might die without it. And a note to any soon to be parents out there...go for the brightest, noisiest, most annoying gear out there. They LOVE it, and they HATE the boring stuff that actually matches your decor...just go ahead while you're at it and get over your decor all together...it will soon be over taken by swings, johnny-jump ups, baby gyms, bouncy seats and bassinets. You will have a new decor...it's called "Can you tell we have a baby???"

Wow...got a little off topic there...anyway...never mind, I don't even remember where I was going with all that, but at least you got to see a picture of sweet Ezra...

Here's an even sweeter one for your viewing pleasure...asleep on my shoulder...I can't even stand it...

Public Service Announcement: Retinoblastoma

Amelia Cone is heavy on my heart tonight. She is a 6 month old baby girl that will have surgery tomorrow ti remove 2 tumors, 1 from behind each eye. She has retinoblastoma. This is the Mayo Clinic's definition of it:

Retinoblastoma
is a cancer that begins in the retina — the sensitive lining on the inside of your eye. Retinoblastoma most commonly affects young children, but can rarely occur in adults.

Your retina is comprised of nerve tissue that senses light as it comes through the front of your eye. The retina sends signals through your optic nerve to your brain, where these signals are interpreted as images.

Although a rare form of cancer, retinoblastoma is the most common cancer affecting the eye in children. The National Cancer Institute estimates about 300 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma each year in the United States.

It's pretty rare, but occurs most often in children under 2. I had never heard of this cancer until a couple of months ago.

One morning out of the blue Jay sent me a link to this article, along with this picture he had taken with his phone of Annalee...

A simple photo can save your child's life

A childhood friend of mine also had this condition, (retinoblastoma), he had lost an eye because it was not caught until it was too late. The condition, although not well publicized, can be detected when one eye has the "red-eye" glare, the other shows white. It usually appears before the age of 3.

FTA:

Nurse Samantha Rouse discovered her nine-month-old son Jacob's eye appeared white in a photo she took of him.
A simple picture may have saved a baby's life after his photo revealed a rare and life threatening tumour behind his eye.

Auxiliary nurse Samantha Rouse discovered her nine-month-old son Jacob's eye appeared white in a photo she took of him.

The glare from the camera revealed light sensitive cells in his eye that could not be seen face-to-face - a sign of the rare eye cancer retinoblastoma, a rapidly-developing cancer that forms in the cells of the retina, the light-detecting tissue in the eye.

To say the least, we were freaked out. I was 2 weeks from delivering Ezra, and really couldn't even think about it. But I made an appt with our pedi and took her in a few days later. He looked in her eyes and didn't see anything, but referred us to a specialist just to be on the safe side, since there could have been a small tumor that couldn't be seen without dilating her eyes.

We made thay appt for a week later, and for the first time, I was hoping I would not go into labor a little early this was one appt I did not want to miss.

I'd love to say I didn't worry and fret over it, but I did. I could not imagine my baby girl being sick, and having her eye s operated on, and the horrible possibilities of her losing her eyesight and possibly even death. It was truly more than I could really take in at that point. I would imagine having a newborn and my first baby in the hospital having surgery or chemotherapy...it was a possible nightmare. Jay and I didn't really tell anyone what was going on. Mainly because we didn't want them to worry needlessly, and partly because saying it just made it to real a possibility.

Thankfully we went to the appt and Annalee was given a clean bill of health. Absolutely no tumors! Praise the Lord! I was and am so thankful!

So little Amelia's story has just really hit home, when we could so easily be going down the same road they are right now.

So please pay attention to the pictures you take of your children, and ask your pedi to screen them at the next appt.

Smiley Faces!

Annalee has a new skill.

She can draw smiley faces, she's been doing this for a couple of months now, and she loves it, and will draw them over and over. One day my friends Sonya and Laura were here, and Laura's daughter, Annalee's BFF Kate, and Sonya let Kate and Annalee draw in her notebook, and the pretty well filled it up, and all of Annalee's drawings were...yep..smiley faces...so anyway...

Yesterday Annalee was drawing on her Magna doodle, and brought it over for me to see, and it was of course a smiley face, I oohed and aahed over it and then sent her on her way...well a minute later she came back with another smiley face, but this time she had added a new element...It had 2 unbelievably cute legs!!

So of course I really oohed and aahed this time, and even took a picture...and then once more sent her on her way.

Another minute later she came back with this...

Now it had legs and arms!!

The process went on again and she came back with this...

Arms, Legs, Cheeks and a Chin!!

Is that not the cutest thing you've ever seen??? I am so proud of her!! I'm definitely going to get her to do this on paper so I can frame it!!

Jude's 1st Ice Cream Cone!

The weather has been so nice here...actually even down right hot already!

So we took the kids out for ice cream the other night. We decided to go to Brewster's and when we got there we realized there were no seats open, so we were going to sit on the curb but when we got our ice cream, one family got up to let us sit down since they were finishing up, and went on to tell us that they were us once, they have 3 kids all a little more than a year apart who are now 16, 17 and 18...The mom said "I'm proof that you will survive!" YAY!!

Anyway, back to my story... We got Annalee and Jude both a "baby" cone of vanilla, and well, we know Jude loves his sweets, and he has never just been handed an ice cream cone...He thought he had died and gone to heaven, and proceeded to eat it with both hands as quickly as possible for fear that surely we would take it away at any moment...

I just let him go at it, knowing I had a tub full of baby wipes in the bag...

A lot of it ended up in his lap, but I think most of it was inhaled!

Annalee even tried to help him with all of her 3 year old ice cream eating wisdom.

They were both absolutely disgusting at the end of it all, but it was worth it.

Easter Fun!

Easter is by far my favorite holiday. I am so thankful to call Jesus my savior and to spend sometime remembering his last days and the his RESURRECTION! I just love it!Plus there are fun activities and family time to go with it! The weekend before Easter we took the kiddos to an egg hunt in Ft. Inn. They had a great time grabbing eggs, and jumping in the jump castle and sliding down the huge slide!

On Good Friday I made Hot cross buns because of the story behind them found here... and then I took most of them to my sisters because she was actually going to be seeing some of her friends that night for a messianic passover meal. They turned out really good! I will definitely do it again next year!
Then on Saturday Annalee and I dyed eggs...she did so good, I barely even had to help her!

Easter Sunday, Jay had 3 services at church to play for, while we stayed home until the final one and prepared food for our family lunch and the kiddos got to enjoy their baskets!

After church we went to my sisters for an awesome lunch and family time, plus another egg hunt for the little ones...

We actually (barely) got a nice photo of my mom and us girls...that never happens, and we got so tickled in the middle of it, that we are lucky we got one even this good...We are such girls we were all complaining about our position and did I have a double chin or is my hair to stringy or my head to small...it was ridiculous and hilarious!!

A truly great holiday...the only down side was I waited to late to get a family shot, and we were all exhausted and it did not turn out so well, but it's all I have so here it is... we're all really a lot cuter than this :)
and this is pretty much what Ezra did the whole time :)
